In partnership with our colleagues at CareKnowledge, we’re pleased to share details of this upcoming webinar:
Title: Beyond Technique: Motivational Interviewing, Power and Ethical Practice
Date: Thursday 18th June 2026
Time: 10am – 12 Midday (on-line)
Speakers: Frederik Eliasson, Nina Kyriacou and Dr Henry Smith
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a practical, person-centred approach that helps professionals have more effective conversations – particularly when people may feel unsure, resistant, or overwhelmed. Using MI can support you to build trust, explore what matters to individuals and families, and encourage positive change without judgement.
Target behaviour? A critical analysis of motivational interviewing in children and family social work was a recent article written by Nina Kyriacou and Dr Henry Smith. It highlighted how MI’s focus on individual motivation can risk shifting responsibility onto individuals to bring about changes that they are not able to influence because of the social and structural influences shaping their circumstances.
This CareKnowledge Live webinar will provide an opportunity to explore an important question: when is it reasonable to focus on motivation, and how do we guard against inadvertently placing responsibility on individuals to change circumstances they can barely influence? The webinar will also explore how MI can be used ethically in everyday practice.
The focus is not on developing MI skills but an invitation to think together about how we work with motivation in ways that are humane, context-aware, and ethically grounded. As always in CareKnowledge Live, the emphasis will be on thoughtful dialogue, professional curiosity, and the space to think.
