Our improvement plan test

  • To ensure children and families get the right support, at the right time, and in the right place.
  • And in response to the COVID-19 pandemic we will ensure all children particularly the most vulnerable are connected to learning, friends, community and to build back better

We work with nearly 5,000 children and young people and their families every year, including 700 in care and 440 older care leavers.

At the beginning of 2020, Ofsted carried out a three-week inspection of our Children’s Services. The overall judgement was ‘inadequate’. After learning the outcome of the inspection, we sent a letter to our partners that outlined the details of the report, while Ofsted communicated the findings to Devon’s young people. You can read the full report on the Ofsted website.

We need to do some things better

It’s our collective responsibility, as a partnership, to improve the life chances of all children and young people in Devon.

Unfortunately, we weren’t getting it right for some of the most vulnerable children in Devon:

Our senior leaders have also not had good enough oversight of inadequate practice or systematically informed improvement.

We need to improve, and this plan sets out what we will do differently and how we know we are making progress.

As we work to improve the service, we will be using this webpage to update you on our progress as well as publishing any associated reports and documents. You can find the latest progress report, as well as the improvement report itself, at the top right-hand side of this page.
