Vaccinations update – 15 January
The new Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine was given to the first people in Devon last week, with thousands more doses expected to be administered in the coming days and weeks.
As set out by the Government, both the Oxford and Pfizer vaccines will initially be given to the priority groups.
Meanwhile, NHS England’s plans for the new large vaccination sites across the country are proceeding at pace nationally. In Bristol, a large site opened this week at Ashton Gate, and further sites for the southwest region are due to be announced over the coming weeks.
Once running at full capacity, these sites will be able to vaccinate thousands of people a week. Trained vaccinators will be supported by doctors and nurses checking that the vaccination procedures are safe and appropriate. St John Ambulance will be providing volunteers to support the smooth running of the centres.
Once these sites are open in Devon, those who are eligible and who live nearby will get letters from the national NHS booking service, telling them how they can book their appointment. The extra services will be run from community pharmacies and new vaccination centres.
