Learning from national reviews
National case reviews are undertaken when a serious safeguarding case raises issues of national importance. While most incidents are reviewed locally, cases are progressed to national review where they reveal significant or widespread learning, such as systemic weaknesses, emerging risks, or complex cross-agency issues that could inform practice across England.
The NSPCC keeps the most comprehensive collection of publicly accessible national case reviews in the UK. The national case review repository provides a single place to access and share
learning at a local, regional and national level.
Additionally, our colleagues in Torbay Safeguarding Children Partnership produce a monthly summary of each newly published review along with a link to the relevant report. These summaries are shared with us so that we can ensure consistent ways of working across the greater Devon area, and you can find these documents on the Torbay SCP website.
National thematics
The NSPCC also publish thematic briefings highlight the learning from case reviews that are conducted when a child dies or is seriously injured and abuse or neglect are suspected. Each briefing focuses on a different topic, pulling together key risk factors and practice recommendations to help practitioners understand and act upon the learning from case reviews.
The NSPCC thematic briefings are available on their website.
